Choosing the Right Contractor
What Criteria Should You Consider?
Finding a Air Conditioning and Heating – HVAC – Contractor you can trust can be a time consuming task. Researching your contractor selection is vitally important when considering improvements or repairs for your home.
Here is a list of tips to use as a guideline as you review your options:
Referrals and References
Ask the contractor you are considering to provide you with references of customers they have done work for recently. Were the service technicians on time? How was the cleanliness of the work area? Were the service technicians knowledgeable and able to answers questions? How did the system perform after installation or repair?
Licenses and Insurance
Is the contractor licensed in your state? Are they insured to protect you and your property? Ask to see recent verification of current general liability to protect your property as well as worker’s compensation insurance on their employees. Are they bonded?
Experienced Service Technicians
Licenses are important, but so is experience. Can you verify the contractor’s number of years of industry experience?
Professional associations are an excellent way to determine high quality local air conditioning and heating service companies. Some of the major professional HVAC associations include:
- ACCA – Air Conditioning Contractors of America
- ASHRAE – American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers
- NCI – National Comfort Institute
Trust and Longevity
Check how long the contractor has been in business? Are there outstanding complaints that have gone unaddressed by the company? Does the company drug test and background check all employees before hiring them?
24 Hour Emergency Service
The contractor you select should offer 24 hour Emergency Service. Are they easy to reach during business hours and even more importantly are they available AFTER business hours? Is their Emergency phone line answered by a company employee or a call service?
Guarantees
Does the company have a written 100% Customer Satisfaction Money Back Guarantee?
Permits
If there are permits required for the work to be performed will the contractor handle the paperwork and approval for the permits?
